After retrieving the Staff of Earthen Might and dealing with the bullywug menace, the PCs return to Restwell Keep, to find Sergeant Blackoak ready with their pay in exchange for evidence of the bullywug’s demise.
The party retires to the Stumbling Giant for the evening, Kallista performs for the local crowd while Gendrin, Gilly and Eryn work the room for information. They hear rumours of cairns being spotted atop a hill to the south of the Blackened Dale, and that a delegation from Lodestone has gone missing en route to Drellin’s Scarp. The party then heads back to their residence.
The following morning, having decided to check out the cairns, the keep is rocked by a series of tremors as a cavernous hole opens up in the middle of the outer bailey, swallowing a number of children.
Rushing to aid the keep’s citizens, they are accosted by several town elders telling them not to interfere. Several of the PCs attempt to recover children using a rope, while Kallista creates a silent image of herself, and uses the distraction and a cloud of dust to sneak into the pit.
Down in the pit Kallista discovers a long corridor, and a pair of opposing doors of dwarfish design. After her brief sortie into the complex she returns to the pit and creating a series of minor tremors, gives the rest of the party an opportunity to enter the pit.
The group begins to explore, unearthing a privy before heading down the long corridor. As they approach the far end they find a door with a viewing port in it. A figure moves beyond the door and above them, a series of cages begin to crash down filling the passageway. Gendrin, Bryth, Gilly and Kallista manage to avoid being crushed by the falling cages but Eryn is clipped by one and pinned under the bars.
The group, now split up spends several minutes working their way through the cages in sequence to reach the door, Bryth shooting gouts of flame and noxious gasses through the door in an attempt to incapacitate their foe beyond. Gendrin breaks through the door and subdues the half-orc Grund beyond.
As the party takes a breather in the antechamber beyond the trap, a group of bandits in blackened armour burst into the room and shout “We are the Bringers of Woe. We have come to reward your curiosity”.
